How To Determine Which Fence Contractor Is Best For You!

Writer: Thomas PodleskiThomas Podleski

As a contractor I have ran into so many homeowners who have had TERRIBLE experiences in many different tradesmen. Unfortunately, there are many untrustworthy and unworthy contractors in the Rockwall, TX area. However, the number of unworthy contractors' pales in comparison to the number of contractors you CAN trust.

Here are a few tips in choosing your Fence Contractor:

1. Does this individual or company have a social media page?

This is such an important question because quick search on Facebook or Instagram can quickly tell you whether or not this is a good fit for you. You want to choose a contractor with a social media page because there should be PLENTY of previous work and a lengthy gallery area for you to see if their quality of work matches your expectations. You also want to look at the number of times or how often your contractor is posting on social media. The frequency of the posts and the quality of posts will be an indicator on how serious this contractor is about his work and reputation. While this should not be the only contributing factor in this decision, this should be something you ask in your first consultation. If you are considering moving forward with a contractor that does not have a social media page you are risking the money you spend, the kind of construction experience you have, or a prolonged timeline. Generally, the more professional, serious, and courteous contractors have some social media following to a certain degree.

2. Does this business have a google profile page?

There are MANY contractors in the DFW area that either have a poor google listing or a no google listing at all! A google listing is important because it contains a great deal of information about the contractor and his or her business. Generally, the contractors I have ran into on job sites or supply stores that do not have a google listing are very unprofessional and likely have many customers that are NOT happy! You should be weary of any contractor that does not have a listing or a very poor listing. These listings will contain reviews, updates, website link, and various photos of their previous work. A professional contractor you can trust will normally have a very strong google business listing. Meaning there will be a plethora of 5 star reviews, business updates on their timeline, product listings, previous work, website link, etc. You want a contractor with a google listing because it is another reassuring factor that he or she will show up and get the job done!

3. Does this contractor or business have a website?

A professional website will give you INSIGHT on how this individual runs their business. We all have seen poorly done websites that show little to no effort or thought when putting together their website. A fence contractors' business is a reflection of themselves! If you see a website that is professionally put together, has many different resources to pull from (gallery, FAQ, blog, etc), and does not give you a "bad feeling" about a particular contractor chances are you can trust your fence project in their hands. A professional fence contractor should have every available resource open for you to vet them. If you come across a fence contractor, you are thinking about working with and you cannot find any information regarding the business, or the owner personally should give you a red flag!

4. Does this fence contractor have insurance?

Insurance should be a deal breaker for you as a homeowner! In construction there is a WIDE opportunity for mistakes to happen. Do not be mistaken, you will not be able to find a contractor that is 100% perfect or one that will not make mistake no matter how big or small. Think about it, how many times have you made a mistake at work? While mistakes are likely to happen, a contractor who is worth their salt will 100% take responsibility for their actions and give you a action plan to rectify the issue at no further cost to you. In the case there was a huge mistake that happened you do not want to be left stranded with a contractor with no insurance to back his business. At that point, the damages may fall back onto you!
